Flesh-eating dinosaur bigger than a double Decker bus with teeth the size of bananas discovered !

NewDinoSWNS.jpg
One of the biggest flesh-eating dinosaurs ever to stalk the Earth has been discovered by a British student.
Bigger than a double decker bus and with razor sharp teeth the size of bananas, the seven-ton giant roamed the lush plains of the Sahara around 95 million years ago. The new species, Carcharodontosaurus iguidensis, was discovered by Bristol University postgraduate student Steve Brusatte while working on an undergraduate degree in Chicago. Its fossilised remains were discovered alongside two other giant prehistoric predators, including the largest ever to walk the land, hunted for food and possibly even fought each other. Another monster – the 24 feet expanded Rugops – was additionally unearthed at the same site. Its name means “wrinkle face” and it too was a hunter.

The gigantic dinosaur would have dwarfed a T-Rex and would have weighed around 7 tones. The discovery of three rival giant carnivores in a real-life Jurassic Park has astonished fossil experts who say it could revolutionize the understanding of dinosaur behavior. Carcharodontosaurus species are extremely rare. One was found in Egypt in the 1920s, but was destroyed when Munich was bombed in the Second World War. A cranium of another species was found in Morocco 10 years ago.

ReplayTV changes hands again, acquired by DirecTV

Filed under:

DirecTV just did itself a solid and picked up the pre-TiVo DVR company, ReplayTV, from parent company D&M. We don’t know what all bundle of valuable time-shifting IP and patents wound up being worth in the mold of an acquisition price tag, but it’s got to be a pretty penny — particularly to a company like DirecTV, which has watched its peers have a prickly run-in or two with TiVo and its heavyweight “time warp” patent. Something tells us the make will probably only live on in legacy alone, though. We just can’t see much reason for DirecTV to bother carrying on with the half-assed comeback ReplayTV’s been trying to invent by the past couple of years.

Windows 7 to get integrated touch features?

Regardless of how Tablet PCs have actually done in the marketplace, Microsoft has always been a staunch proponent of touch interfaces, and it looks like the next version of Windows, currently under the codename Windows 7, will bundle in multi-touch features like those found in the iPhone and Microsoft’s own Surface. The news comes from Microsoft engineer Hilton Locke, who blogged about Dell’s multi-touch capable (but not enabled) Latitude XT earlier today, and added, “if you are impressed by the ‘touch features’ in the iPhone, you’ll be blown away by what’s coming in Windows 7.” Locke went on to imply that it’s been challenging selling touch to manufacturers, saying “Now whether only we could convince more OEMs that Windows Touch Technology is going to drive their sales.” That’s a surprise to us — that Big Ass Table demo pretty much sells itself, don’t you think?

AMD admits it overpaid for ATI, will take unspecified charge

Filed under:

Although you may not have been paying close attention to the actual breakdown, $3.2 billion of the staggering $5.6 billion AMD coughed up in order to acquire ATI last year was simply an estimated goodwill value. Unfortunately for the world’s number two chip maker, that estimate wasn’t precisely accurate. Reportedly, AMD admitted that it did indeed overpay for ATI, and to produce matters worse, it noted that it would be forced to “write down the value of the goodwill estimate it attached to ATI” in a recent SEC filing. whether you’re curious about the exact amount, however, you’ll be staying on pins and needles for the date being, as even AMD isn’t certain how large the charge will be. Granted, things could certainly be worse, but we’d bet AMD would argue otherwise.

ITC dashes Qualcomm’s hopes, rules in favor of Nokia

Filed under:

No, that isn’t some horrific dream stuck on repeat. The legal quarrels within Nokia and Qualcomm are actually still ongoing, and while a US universal Trade Commission judge has indeed issued an initial determination that favors Nokia, you can bet your bottom dollar that Qualcomm will be “petitioning the commission for a review.” Nevertheless, judge Paul Luckern reportedly “found no infringement or violation by Nokia of the three asserted Qualcomm patents,” which consequently led Nokia’s CFO to proclaim that that was simply “another folded attempt by Qualcomm to mislead both Nokia and the telecommunications industry.” Of course, we wouldn’t recommend striking that battle off as complete — after all, the determination now has to be forwarded on to the full commission for review, and it’s not slated to dole out a final shout until April.
